Library Facilities

Books, literature searches and access to electronic resources are only a part of the service your health library provides. The library is also a physical space where you can study or get work done away from a noisy or overcrowded office or a busy home.  It is also a good "time out" zone to de-stress and chill and refocus your mind.

Here's what you will find in the Health Library at County:

 •NHS Networked PCs

•Books

•Study Space

•External WiFi

•Laptops/space to use your own devices

•Printing

•Photocopying/scanning

•Laminating

•Vending machines

•Friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff

Cervical Cancer Prevention Week

Cervical Cancer Prevention Week

22nd to 28th January 2024

According to Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust, every day in the UK nine women are diagnosed with cervical cancer and two lose their lives to it.  Nearly all cases are caused by an infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV). There are tools available to help prevent cervical cancer, such as cervical screening and the HPV vaccination.  However – there is still more to be done - which is why Jo’s Trust continue with their annual campaign, Cervical Cancer Prevention Week, in order to raise awareness of these tools and to tackle inequalities in cancer prevention.

Journal TOC alerts

 Creating Table of Contents Alerts

If you have a favourite journal in your area of expertise it may be useful to set up a Table of Contents or TOC alert for yourself. This means that every time there is a new edition of the journal you will receive an email listing the contents. You can then make a decision as to whether there are any articles which you wish to read in full text.

You can obtain ToCs freely by registering with the site Journal TOCs and then selecting the journal titles for which you wish to receive TOCs. The site claims to provide the largest, free collection of scholarly journal Tables of Contents (TOCs) with 36,030 journals including 17,884 selected Open Access journals and 12,196 Hybrid journals, from 3750 publishers.

Journal coverage includes medical sciences, pharmacy and pharmacology, nutrition and dietetics, social sciences and welfare. You can receive the alerts as RSS feeds or by email if you prefer.

JournalTOCs is a free service provided by Herriot-Watt University. Useful step by step instructions for registering and using JournalTOCs can be found on the Cornell University website at https://www.library.cornell.edu/research-teaching/current-awareness/

Often you can also sign up for TOCs directly online from a journal’s homepage. If a journal title you want to sign up to isn’t included in the JournalTOC service above this is an alternative option.

If you find something in the TOC alert that you want to read in full text you may be able to click the link and get straight through to the full text but if not you may need to make a note of the citation and use the journals A-Z in order to get access via UHNM subscriptions using your OpenAthens log-in.

Please do not hesitate to contact the library for more help and advice on this.
