Electronic Resources

The Health Libraries provide you with access to a wide range of resources to help you to find the information you need, including databases, clinical decision-making tools, drugs reference tools, exam support, guidelines and procedures, patient information, topic summaries and more.

All the resources are listed on the NHS Resources page on the website for the Health Library (CEC, Royal Stoke):

It is recommended that you also sign up for an OpenAthens password which is needed to access many of the resources in full.

The Sepsis Game - Available to borrow!

As it is World Sepsis Day on Sunday 13th September we would like to promote the fact that the Health Library at County has an educational game based on Sepsis which is available for loan to individuals or groups with health library membership. (It is easy enough to play in a Covid secure way by allocating people to the question cards and board and spacing out in a room). If requested library staff would be happy to facilitate a session. Games can be played by 2-12 players. It can be used as an ice-breaker for a study session or played to the end over a longer period of up to an hour and is suitable for all clinical staff or students in any healthcare setting.

Produced by Focus Games in association with The Sepsis Trust UK and NHS England, the game is described on their website as:

"A fun and informative board game that helps clinical staff improve their knowledge and management of sepsis. Based around the Sepsis Six care bundle and supporting the Survive Sepsis training programme, it stimulates discussion about improving identification and treatment of sepsis".

Further details about the game as outlined on Focus Games website are that:

The Sepsis Game is designed to raise awareness of sepsis and ensure that clinical staff always “think sepsis”. By playing the game, staff will learn about the importance of spotting sepsis early and escalating treatment.

The Sepsis Game is a unique way of bringing staff together to discuss the challenges of sepsis, a condition which is everyone’s responsibility to recognise and manage. Two teams compete against each other, progressing round the board by providing answers to questions about sepsis. Answers are developed through discussions within the team, allowing players to explore each other’s perspectives, which is particularly useful for multidisciplinary team training.

Topics covered in the game include:

o    Prevalence and impact of sepsis

o    Causes of sepsis

o    Recognising sepsis

o    What to do when sepsis is suspected

o    Treatment (including Sepsis Six)

24/7 access to the library

We are pleased to announce that following lockdown during which the physical library facilities were closed, out of hours access has now been reinstated at the Health Library at County giving 24/7 admittance to eligible staff.

The library is currently staffed 10-4 Monday to Friday, although staff are working remotely outside of these hours. Library members can also access the library 9-5 when the PGMC building is open.

If you wish to access the library outside of the 9-5 you need to be a member of the library (join here:  https://www.keele.ac.uk/healthlibrary/usingthehealthlibrary/join/) and will need to contact us at library@uhnm.nhs.uk or pop in so we can sort out permissions.

If you have previously been granted out of hours access we suggest you test your badge or card to ensure it is functioning if you are planning on working late and advise that you don't pop out leaving anything in the building if you haven't tested your card to ensure you can re-enter. Please contact us in case of any problems or if you are unsure if you have previously applied for access. (Note that your library membership needs to be kept up-to-date for out of hours access cards to remain active).

If you have previously paid a refundable deposit as you are not a County hospital badge holder, and find that you no longer need out of hours access or are leaving the Trust, please return the card to us in person and we will provide your refund.
