Pictures to Share

The library has just taken delivery of some gorgeous books published by Pictures to Share. The books are specifically aimed at dementia sufferers and the pictures have been carefully chosen. The books have a variety of colour and black and white pictures, drawings and photographs to evoke a memory or act as a starting point for conversation. There are also some words to go with the pictures -sometimes a quote or words from a well-known song.

The books can be borrowed to use with patients and their families or if you are caring for a family member with dementia you may want to take one home on loan. You can also borrow more of the Pictures to Share books from Staffordshire Public Library service if you are a member.

We currently have:

  • At the seaside in pictures
  • Travelling in pictures
  • A world of work in pictures
  • Pets in pictures
  • Family life in pictures

Find out more about how to use the books on the Pictures to Share website here:

Signs and symptoms in black and brown skin by Mind the Gap

The Mind the Gap project aims to highlight the lack of diversity in the medical literature and education and have created a downloadable guide  https://www.blackandbrownskin.co.uk/mindthegap which is a clinical handbook of signs and symptoms in black and brown skin.

The guide was highlighted in the press and in an article in the BMJ :

Rimmer Abi. Presenting clinical features on darker skin: five minutes with . . . Malone Mukwende BMJ 2020; 369 :m2578

You can read more about the Mind the Gap project here: https://www.blackandbrownskin.co.uk/our-vision and find yet more resources in the references and on their website  such as an instagram page and Skin Deep which is led by the international medical education team, Don’t Forget the Bubbles (DFTB) and the Royal London Hospital (RLH).   https://dftbskindeep.com/

Journal of the Month

British Journal of Healthcare Assistants - this is a journal especially for healthcare assistants and assistant practitioners, which we subscribe to for you. Each issue contains a wide range of bespoke, evidence-based articles providing examples of good practice in all areas of healthcare. Every article highlights learning outcomes, to support your training and to help extend your knowledge and skills.

Published once a month the journal is essential reading for all HCAs and APs who are serious about developing their own career, as well as providing the best possible support for the patients in their care. Authors include practice specialists and researchers leading in their field and BJHCA welcomes and encourages articles from HCAs and APs themselves.

You can access it online by logging in with your NHS OpenAthens username. If you struggle to remember to check the journal each month you also have the option of setting up a table of contents (ToC) alert whereby you receive an email each time new articles are published and can then log in and read the ones that interest you. See our post from 6th August for details of how to do this or ask us to help set it up for you.

World Menopause Day – 18th October 2020

The menopause is a natural part of ageing that usually occurs between 45 and 55 years of age as a woman's oestrogen levels decline.

Studies have shown that menopause symptoms can have a significant impact on attendance and performance in the workplace.

As our populations are living longer, working longer and with so many women working within the NHS it is important to support staff during this time to stay well and thrive in their workplace.

World Menopause Day is a worldwide awareness call for women who face health issues when approaching, during and beyond the menopause.

The International Menopause Society’s World Menopause Day Awareness Campaign highlights the opportunity of using the menopausal period to assess female-specific risk factors and preventing the development of cardiovascular disease.

For more information surrounding the menopause, please visit the British Menopause Society, NHS Employers and NHS Choices websites:

Libraries Week Round-up

Library staff enjoyed meeting clincial and non-clinical staff and patients whilst handing out free books last week to celebrate #LibrariesWeek. If you didn't manage to get a copy of Mike Gayle's The man I think I know we do have a copy available for loan along with many others in our leisure reading collection.

We managed to take some photos (see below) with staff on Wards 8,7,15 and Elective Orthopaedics

(If you are receiving this blogpost as an email you may need to click through to the blog to see the pictures in full https://countyhealthlibrary.blogspot.com/)

Book Club

If you enjoy reading why not enquire about joining our book club? You don't have to go away and read a specific book, it is more a get together to discuss what you have been reading and share recommendations and can be leisure reading or leadership/management/self-help style books. We are currently liaising with members to see how they would prefer it to run during the current climate ie face to face or in an online format.

Libraries Week 5-10 October

The 5th-10th October is #LibrariesWeek. We are celebrating by offering a limited number of FREE books to staff, patients and their families and carers. These were donated to us as part of the Reading Agency’s annual World Book Night celebrations which were due to take place on 23rd April. This year due to lockdown we are instead distributing them during Libraries Week.

Reading for pleasure is a globally recognised indicator in a huge range of social issues from poverty to mental health, yet in England alone, 36% of people don’t regularly read (DCMS, 2015). The Health Libraries at UHNM recognise the importance of The Reading Agency and its work to inspire people to share reading and celebrate the difference it makes to our lives.

Call in to the library to collect your free copy whilst stocks last. (Why not take a look around and join the library whilst you are there?) The book is yours to read, keep or pass on and share. We hope you enjoy it.

We also aim to hand out copies in the hospital during the week (gloved and masked of course!!).
